AIZAWL (Mizoram), Wednesday, 14th September 2022: The second North East Senior Zonal Championship tipped off at the Hawla Indoor Stadium in Mizoram’s capital Aizawl yesterday.

Seven North Eastern State teams, barring Sikkim (which is yet to be formally recognized by Basketball Federation of India) are participating in the men’s and women’s sections.

The top three teams from the previous North East Zonal Championship have been placed in Pool A. The remaining teams have been placed in Pool B.

Mizoram (men) and Assam (women) are the defending champions, with Assam (men) and Meghalaya (women) as runners up from last year.

Championship Format

The Championship is being played in a single leg round robin format, with Pool B games taking place first.

Thereafter, the top men’s and women’s teams from Pool B will compete with the Pool A teams, in the second round. The teams with the highest points at the end of the second round will be declared the North East Zone Champions and qualify for the 72nd Senior National Basketball Championship that will be held in Udaipur, Rajasthan later this year.

Manipur & AP teams win twice on opening day

On the opening day, both the Manipur and Arunachal Pradesh men’s and women’s teams in the lower Pool B posted victories.

Arunachal Pradesh teams starting off on a losing note against Nagaland and Meghalaya, but later recovered to ensure easy wins over Tripura.

Tripura had a forgettable start losing all four games with huge margins.
